        CHALLENGES - PROBLEM STATEMENTS

        Problem Statement

The primary aim of this challenge is to find an advanced integration power solution for incorporating smart gear technology onto motorbikes. Gear refers to the specialized clothing and protective equipment worn by riders to ensure safety, comfort, and functionality while riding motorcycles. Some common types of gear worn by riders are helmets, jackets, riding suit, boots, gloves communication systems, armours, and bite layers

Currently, the smart garments and helmets require batteries and power banks which are limited in power, run time and is a major pain point for the rider where a recharge is required. The solution would require a system that could be an integral part of the P2W, providing continuous power while riding. We are looking for innovative solution that seamlessly integrate power sources, such as efficient charging systems, to power and enhance the functionalities of smart gear for a futuristic riding experience.

         Two major challenges:

         1. P2W to Gear:  Reliable, seamless power

         2. Gear to Gear : Reliable, seamless power (Lowest possible friction for the customer)

         Additional requirements

› Reliable power supply under all seated riding conditions including movement on the bike. (Standing as secondary condition)

› Reliable power under all environmental influences (Heat / Cold / Rain etc.)

› Minimal time and effort for the rider to set up connection when gearing up and mounting the bike. Reduced Friction.

› The solution needs to show potential for scale, resulting in acceptable added cost for garment and gear.

        Problem Statement

The preliminary aim of this challenge is an electric motor cooling concept for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (FMSM). The concept should include the definition of the cooling concept as well as preliminary electromagnetic simulations The motor specific requirements are 50.5kW peak power and 20kW continuous power. The preferred cooling medium is oil and the inverter should be included in the cooling circuit as well. The heat rejection of the inverter is 700W for this load point. The system should stay as simple as possible and the lubrication of the bearing must be ensured at every given time. For preliminary 2D electromagnetic and 3D CFD simulations an electric motor efficiency of 95% can be used.

         Two major challenges

         1. Definition of the cooling concept

         2. Preliminary verification through simulations of the proposed concept

         Additional requirements

› Simplicity is key (as less additional components and manufacturing steps on possible)

› The concept should be as compact as possible

         › Lightweight design

        Collaboration Potential

        1. ENGINEERING – Simulation and Design of concept.
        1. PROTOTYPING – Testing → KTM supports Proof of Concepts with hardware if necessary.

        Problem Statement

The primary aim of this challenge is to find a concept for a high density on & offboard charger with integrated cooling and a battery offboard cooling station. The charger power must be greater than 3300W with a maximal size of 290 x 140x90mm, The DC output must be smaller than 58.8V. For the onboard use the following certifications must be in place, The charger needs to be road legal in the EU with CE and UL certifications. It must be ASIL B confirm especially in regards of bursting and surging. For the offboard use an additional battery dock is required. For this we are looking for an innovative battery and charger cooling concept with the dock

         Two major challenges

         1. A high density on & offboard charger

         2. A concept for an offboard battery cooling station

         Additional requirements

› Easy and intuitive to use

         › Lightweight design

        Collaboration Potential

        1. ENGINEERING – Collaboration with KTM R&D to develop and design a charger
        1. TECHNOLOGY – Available Product which fulfills KTMs requirements

        Problem Statement

The primary aim of this challenge is to find a concept for a multi-battery swapping solution. The concept should include a mut-battery handling within the vehicle. The amount of battery packs the vehicle is not further defined (1, 2, 3,…). This solution has to be capable of connecting and disconnecting the different battery packs as well as handling the battery BMS in terms of shutting off and master-slave definitions The SOC and SOH has to be monitored and the power regulated within the battery packs with regard of the conditions.

         One major challenge

         A multi-battery swapping solution concept

         Additional requirements

› Easy and live to use

         › Lightweight design

         › Actual Legal requirements

        Collaboration Potential

        1. ENGINEERING – Simulation and Design of concept.

        2. PROTOTYPING – Testing → KTM Supports Proof of Concepts with hardware if necessary

        3. TECHNOLOGY – Available product which fulfills KTMs requirements.

        Problem Statement

In the age of evolving fast mobility solution and technology that has transformed the way we interact with the world, safety remains a paramount concern. The emerging technologies could help us to enhancing the rider safety. One aspect is to measure the body vitals of the rider in real-time while they are in motion on a motor bike. The objective is to elevate the safety of the rider by harnessing technological advancements for real time monitoring and assessment of the vitals health metrics, Ultimately providing invaluable data for emergency responses and proactive safety measures

        Additional requirements

The technology has to be non-intrusive to the rider’s experience and has to be non-invasive.

The data obtained must be real time.

        Eligibility

        • The call is open for solutions from
startups and industries across India that possess a proposal for a minimum
          viable product for the technology.
        • Applicants must be ready to
collaborate with other organisations during the course of the task.

         Collaboration Potential

Prototyping – Testing → KTM supports proof of concepts with hardware if necessary.

Technology – Available product which fulfills KTMs requirements.

        Problem statement

The way the rider is positioned can give a number of clues to their readiness to react to a situation: are they sitting upright? have they twisted to the side? are they in a racing crouch? In which direction is the head pointing? In cars there are already many devices used to see where the occupants of the car are sitting, and where the driver’s eyes are looking. Is it possible to do something similar for motorcycling?

        Major challenge

To be able to monitor the general position of
the rider while riding, in particular:

        •  If the rider is sitting upright on crouched
        •  If the rider has one or both hands on the handlebars
        •  It the rider has rotated their torso to the side
        •  The general direction where the rider is looking

        Additional requirements

It is not permitted to add anything to the rider or their protective clothing equipment which requires to be powered.

› The system must function during night time

› The system must function when there is precipitation

› A single installation point on the motorcycle is preferred

› Pricing should be framed on a quantity of 10 000 pieces

        Collaboration potential

                     Prototype evaluation & refinement

› Testing a KTM supports proof of concepts with hardware if necessary

                     Technology Procurement

› If the presented product fulfils the requirement it may be considered for future procurement.
